Meniscus and cruciate ligament surgery

Meniscus and cruciate ligament surgery of the knee is a surgical procedure performed with the aim of restoring the normal function and biomechanics of the knee.

The meniscus are fibrocartilaginous crescent-shaped structures that are located inside our knee. They have the function of supporting axial loads, functioning as a shock absorber in the knee. Various rotational or braking mechanisms can cause injury to these structures. The

most common symptoms are: pain, feeling of blockage, limitation of knee mobility and feeling of instability in the knee.

Currently meniscus surgery is performed arthroscopically. Through small incisions and the use of cameras we can access inside the knee to perform different procedures that allow us to heal and save most of a meniscus that has suffered an injury.

At orthopedic elite we offer innovative, world-class procedures for meniscus repair. The use of collagen matrices and meniscal wrapping techniques are considered top procedures for meniscal preservation and regeneration. We are an active part of the global #Savethemeniscus movement.

The cruciate ligaments within the knee are fundamental structures for its stability and function. A knee with an injury to one of the cruciate ligaments is predisposed to suffer rapid wear out and subsequent severe osteoarthritis if the injury is not repaired. That is why every active and functional patient who does not present advanced wear out of the knee joint must be treated to restore the integrity of the cruciate ligaments that are damaged.

Anterior or posterior cruciate ligament surgery is performed in a minimally invasive manner, using a mixture of arthroscopic surgery with minimally invasive surgery to create new cruciate ligaments from autologous (tendons from the patient) or heterologous (cadaveric donor) tendon grafts. Once the grafts are placed, the patient’s body has the ability to accept them and create new cruciate ligaments from the new tissue. This restores the stability of the knee and allows it to recover its proper biomechanical functioning.

Rehabilitation after surgery is crucial to regaining adequate strength, function, and mobility.

An individualized physical therapy program will be designed to help strengthen surrounding muscles, improve flexibility, and promote full recovery.

It is necessary to evaluate each specific case to determine if a patient deserves cruciate ligament or meniscus surgery treatment. This will depend on the severity of the injury, the location and the individual needs of the patient. Come to us and together we will evaluate the best treatment option for your specific situation.
