Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition that occurs when the median nerve, which passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, becomes compressed or trapped, causing symptoms in the hand and fingers. This syndrome is common and can be caused by a variety of factors, including tendon inflammation, wrist anatomy, and repetitive hand and wrist movements.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may include:

  • Numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers.
  • Pain in the wrist, which may radiate to the arm or shoulder.
  • Weakness in the hand and difficulty grasping small objects.
  • A feeling of swelling or burning in the hand and fingers.

Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome may include:

Rest and change of activity: Reducing or modifying activities that cause symptoms.Wrist splint: Wearing a splint to keep the wrist in a neutral position during sleep and activities.

Physical therapy: Stretching and strengthening exercises to improve wrist mobility and strength.

Medications taken or injected: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation and pain.

Surgery: In severe and persistent cases, carpal tunnel release may be necessary to relieve pressure on the nerve.

If you experience symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, it is important to seek medical attention.
