De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition that affects the tendons at the base of the thumb, in the wrist area. It is characterized by inflammation of the compartment where the thumb tendons pass, which can cause pain and limited movement. This condition often develops due to repetitive movements of the thumb and wrist, as well as overuse.
Symptoms of de Quervain’s tenosynovitis may include:
- Pain at the base of the thumb or the side of the wrist, which may extend into the forearm.
- Pain when gripping, pinching, or moving the thumb and wrist.
- Swelling and tenderness in the affected area.
- Difficulty moving the thumb and performing activities that involve its use.
Treatment for de Quervain’s tenosynovitis may include:
Rest: Avoid movements and activities that worsen symptoms.
Wrist splint: Use a splint to immobilize the wrist and allow the tendons to heal.Physical therapy: Stretching and strengthening exercises to improve function and reduce inflammation.
Medications taken or injected: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and inflammation.
Activity modification: Avoid activities that may worsen symptoms.
Surgery: In severe and persistent cases, surgery may be considered to release the tendon compartment and relieve pressure on the tendons.
